Doulas, Midwives, and OBs: Pregnancy + Birth Care Options in Great Falls
Whether you're hoping for a natural birth, planning a hospital delivery, or want someone to help you navigate the birth process, having the right birth support is so important. As a mom of six home-birthed kiddos, I’m passionate about helping other moms find great birth resources. I’m so thankful that my choice to have homebirths was supported by some wonderful midwives, but it wasn’t always easy to find those midwives, so I wanted to gather some birth options in one place to help out other expectant mamas.
From experienced doulas to the local birth center to OB practices, here are some birth resources to consider when you’re thinking about how you want to meet your little one.

Maternity Clothing Stores in Great Falls
I found that finding stylish and comfortable maternity clothes in Great Falls could be a bit of a challenge—there just aren’t many local stores that carry maternity clothes, let alone a stand-alone maternity boutique. But if you’d rather try things on in person than gamble on an online order, or you need a new outfit right now, there are a few local spots worth checking out. So whether you’re looking for everyday basics, something cute for an event, or comfortable clothes for work, here’s where to start shopping locally.
Where to find maternity clothes in Great Falls
Target – Target offers a decent maternity section with a range of basics and seasonal styles, making it a reliable first stop for expectant moms.
Ross – Ross no longer has a dedicated maternity clothes section, but they do say that they still carry a few maternity clothes mixed in with their regular women’s clothing. In my experience Ross’ maternity clothing sizes run very small.
Thrift Stores – Goodwill usually has a decent maternity rack with variety of sizes and styles. Salvation Army has a few maternity items too, though I found that their selection tended to have older/less up to date styles than Goodwill’s. If you're up for some digging, I often spot a few maternity items mixed in with the regular women's clothing at Goodwill.
Old Navy – While the Great Falls Old Navy doesn’t carry maternity clothes in-store, they make this list due to a solid online maternity selection plus the ability to return items in-store if you’d rather not hassle with return shipping.
The right dress + a golden evening = maternity photo magic.

Breastfeeding Support
As a mom of six who breastfed all of my babies and encountered a few challenges along the way, including extreme soreness, oversupply, and tongue tied babies—I know firsthand how important it is to have support in those early days (and beyond)... especially if you need a little more help than the initial breastfeeding assistance provided after birth. The breastfeeding journey isn’t always easy for many moms & babies, and sometimes having someone to troubleshoot or encourage you can make a lot of difference. Thankfully, Great Falls has several resources for breastfeeding moms, from lactation consultants to peer support groups, all ready to help you feel more confident and supported on your nursing journey.

Tongue Tie Support
This is another area where I have personal experience, having had two babies with tongue ties and the accompanying nursing issues. I’ve talked with a number of other moms whose breastfeeding concerns were dismissed, even as they dealt with painful nursing, poor latching, long feedings, slow weight gain, and gassy or extra-fussy babies. These can be signs of a posterior tongue tie—a type of tongue tie that's tucked further back under the tongue, which makes it harder to identify but just as disruptive for feedings as the classic anterior tongue tie.
If breastfeeding isn’t going well, it’s worth checking in with a lactation consultant or provider who is trained to identify posterior tongue ties. Unfortunately many health care providers only recognize anterior tongue ties. If your baby has signs of a posterior tongue tie but you’ve been told they don’t have a tongue tie, consider seeking a second opinion from someone with experience in diagnosing posterior tongue ties. I personally was told by multiple pediatricians and even my homebirth midwife that my last two babies did not a tongue tie, despite clear symptoms. Our breastfeeding issues improved almost immediately after each baby’s laser tongue tie revision.

If your baby does have a tongue tie, there is help. Mast Family Dentistry in Helena is one option for laser tongue and lip tie releases for infants experiencing feeding difficulties. Dr. Mast is one of the few providers in Montana performing this laser procedure. I do not know of anyone in Great Falls who provides laser tongue tie revisions. (If you know of someone who does, please email me and I’ll update this post!)
Two of my babies had their tongue tie revised by Dr. Mast. The recovery & healing process, which includes helping your baby’s tongue stretch in different directions several times a day for weeks to prevent re-attachement of the tongue tie, is rather miserable, but it was worth it in the end for the relief from breastfeeding pain and improvement in my baby’s nursing ability.
